Why dental imaging matters
A large part of what happens with your teeth is invisible to the naked eye: the roots, the bone supporting the teeth, the spaces between teeth, teeth that have not yet erupted. Dental imaging gives the doctor a far better idea of what is going on beneath the surface.
An X-ray can reveal problems with your bite, show how deep a cavity goes or whether there are signs of bone loss. Without it, the doctor would treat only what is visible, with it, they treat the real cause, can confirm it on the spot and can track how your treatment progresses over time.

The types of X-rays and what each is for
Not all X-rays are the same, each type answers a different question, and the doctor chooses the one suited to your situation:
- The periapical X-ray, a detailed image of one or a few teeth, from crown to root tip. It is the go-to X-ray in endodontics (root canal treatments), for abscesses, fractures or checking a root filling.
- The bitewing X-ray, captures the crowns of the upper and lower teeth in the same image. It is the best way to detect hidden cavities between teeth and under fillings, before they start to hurt.
- The panoramic X-ray (OPT / orthopantomogram), an overview of both arches, the jaws and the joints in a single exposure. Useful at a first visit, for wisdom teeth, implant planning, braces or assessing bone loss.
CBCT — 3D dental imaging
CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is the dental scan that builds a three-dimensional image of your teeth, roots, bone and the surrounding anatomical structures. Unlike a classic X-ray, which compresses everything into a flat image, CBCT produces a 3D volume the doctor can navigate slice by slice, in any plane, at real-life scale.
CBCT becomes the standard whenever a clinical decision requires millimetre precision: planning dental implants (bone volume, position of nerves and sinuses), impacted wisdom teeth and their relationship to neighbouring structures, complex endodontics (extra canals, resorptions, lesions at the root tip) and assessing lesions that are hard to see on 2D images.
The difference from a panoramic X-ray is simple: the panoramic shows both arches in a single 2D image, excellent for orientation; CBCT shows exactly the area of interest, in three dimensions. That is why they are often used together: the panoramic for the overview, CBCT for the detail that decides the treatment.
As with every scan in our clinic, exposure is kept to a minimum: the scan is limited to the area of interest — segmental CBCT (200 lei) for a small region, bimaxillary CBCT (400 lei) for both arches — and the doctor only recommends it when 3D information matters for the diagnosis or treatment plan.
How safe dental X-rays are
It is the question most patients ask us, and the answer is reassuring. Dental X-rays use some of the lowest radiation doses in all of medical imaging: the exposed area is very small, the exposure lasts only a few seconds, and modern equipment is built precisely to obtain a clear image with a minimal dose.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes, X-rays are safe for healthy children. What is more, imaging plays a special role in children: their mouths change a great deal as they grow, so it is important to take images regularly to monitor their development as they lose their baby teeth and the permanent teeth erupt.
X-rays help the doctor see whether the permanent teeth are forming correctly, whether there is enough room in the arch and whether there are cavities between the baby teeth, common in children and hard to spot with the naked eye. Detected early, all of these problems are much simpler to fix.
Dental X-rays during pregnancy
X-rays are not recommended for pregnant women. It is a standard precaution: non-urgent procedures are usually postponed until after the birth, and the doctor always looks for alternatives when an expectant mother has a dental problem.
That does not mean, however, that pregnancy and the dental practice do not belong together, quite the opposite. Given the increased risk of cavities, bleeding and gum disease during pregnancy, it is important for pregnant women to book a dental check-up. Tell your doctor that you are pregnant (or might be), and they will adapt the consultation and treatment accordingly.
